Rubber Duck 2009/10
« Thread started on: Jan 13th, 2009, 3:59pm »

Ok now you can put nominations for the next Rubber Duck Award in here - through to the 2010 AGM. (I'm going to try hard not to get a mention this year!)

Cheers

Nomination 2009

The first TallMatt.

The story, it was a pool night with the young people sessions in full swing. This a lesson to all coaches that kayaks hurt if your swimming in the pool. Nice dynamic risk assessment.

Matt decided to practice his swimming by front crawling towards the deep end pool wall performing a roll to push off to maintain speed. With his head down and googles on he paddle as fast as he could straight into the pool kayaks with occupants.

Clonk went his head, the kayaks shifted and up popped his head with his goggles broke. He tried look really innocent but too late both Me and Guru Kid had spotted him. I had to get out of the water so I did not drown laughing. Matt needs speedo's as he would have looked cooler when he shows off next time and gets it wrong.

When asked did it hurt later he admitted it did.

Nice one Matt, this could be a winner.

Well I thought I could nominate both Keith O'Neil and Mark Limmer

Club Sunday (so about the first opportunity after the AGM) both independantly seal launched off the get - to a dead stop on the gravel bank - come guy's it was obvious there wasn't enough water!

Tame but worth a mention!

I didn't see it, but also at Monday's Pool session I understand Sarah came close to going in the pool - before she got changed! (that would have been a dead cert winner!) But escaped with a wet foot.

A joint effort next!

Having set the slalom course up on Saturday, I was slightly disappointed to find the top four gates all down and pushed back to the club side of the river.

The youth of were verbally maligned (unfairly I have to admit) as I got my kit on to go and sort the gates out.

Having paddled across the river, traced the four ropes back expecting to find all cut off. But no, I find all four ropes lead back to what I can best describe as a twig - ok, a small branch - sadly no longer attached to the tree due to the strain, oh how I laughed!

So my apologies to the youth of Sowerby Bridge for thinking ill of them, and my nomination to (I believe) Roger and Cliff!

Despite my ribbing, your efforts (and everyone else's) in helping to put the course up are of course much appreciated

I want to nominate Sarah Ford.

at the slalom on Sunday 29th March, on the last drop, she went over and her paddle got stuck vertically. she the proceded to CLIMB up the paddle shaft in an effort to right the boat, only to end up falling out of the boat.

A nice effort of a roll i think.

I would like to nominate my son Tom Whittington for the rubber duck award.

He attended his first slalom at the club on 29th March and had a swim. Unfortunately, he wasn’t entered in any of the events and didn’t go near a canoe. He managed to slip into one of the rock pools beside the river and got soaked!

He walked back along the river bank like a scarecrow that had wet himself and spent the rest of the day drying out on the wall.

Hi
I have some good video footage and photos of the Anglesey trip, taken with a waterproof camera, while kayaking in, under and on the rocks. If you want a copy let me know and I will email you them to you.

Pete.

I guess it would be remiss of me not to mention putting my new paddle together without checking the glue was waterproof . I'm sure you can work out what happened.

And I'm surprise nobody has mentioned anything at the weir at Copley which raised a laugh.

Brian in a C2 again! (don't paddle with this man!)

This time Brian opted to race with Nathan in the C2 at Howsham Weir - for those that don't know the weir at Howsham is about the same size as puzzle weir with two concrete wlls to channel the water into a good flow.

Anyway, coming down the chute, they went for the breakout at the bottom, hit the wave, wobble dangerously to 45 degrees. A big draw/support from nathan in the back and the boats in the eddy and upright - However as the boat hit the wave Brian went flying out of the front seat into the river. Absolutely priceless!

More laughter injuries were suffered they floundered below the drop, then Brian got back in and carried on! The judges / timers were so confusssed that they even got a score for the run

I didn't see it but have several reliable witnesses . . .

So there definately has to be an honourable mention for Russ (Johnson) on Four Star training this weekend.

Heading up to Serpent's Tail, his groupopted to walk along the towpath and tow their boats. Russ slipped and was inches from and early bath (and a potential rubber duck winning moment).
